Throughout the entire day, she caught glimpses of the other girl wherever she went, the shape of her always tantalisingly close, a knowing smile on her lips as she waited outside the gym in her PE kit, unruly curls of strawberry blonde hair hastily tied back in a ponytail, or as she caught Anathema's eye from across the way, sitting in the classroom opposite her own, blowing kisses, beaming cheerfully.    Wherever she was seen, whenever she was seen, there was that continual feeling of uneasiness, as if the younger girl's shadow did not belong to her, as if the slender shape of her, the playful smile and the irreverent gestures were hiding the presence of something else, something far older, something far more dangerous.

Anathema Calohan is haunted by the unwelcome attentions of an interloper at her school.
